Deadline to share your best outage communications efforts is coming up quickly

By Suzanne Haggerty, Industry Consultant –

It’s that magical time of the year again: the concurrence of Valentine’s Day and the deadline to enter Chartwell’s 2019 Outage Communications Best Practices Awards.

The deadline for submission is Wednesday, Feb. 13, which is admittedly NOT Valentine’s Day. But let’s face it: If you haven’t figured out your plans/gift/excuse by the eve of Cupid’s day of sport (assuming you’re into such frivolities), you’re behind the eight ball and will possibly end your day browsing a picked-over greeting card selection.

Same with your award application: If you wait until Feb.12 to start outlining your narration and compiling your stats, you’re going to be working overtime and may not be able to access all the great data you could otherwise share with our judges.

This is the second year that we’ve distributed the Outage Communications Awards at Chartwell’s Outage Communications Conference; previously, they were part of the Best Practices Awards distributed at EMACS – The Customer Experience Conference in the fall.

Moving the Outage Communications Awards to our June conference allows us to offer attendees at both events more focused and valuable content in their areas of interest and expertise. It also allows us to segment the Outage Communications Awards by utility size – three utilities in each of two size categories will be awarded during the conference with gold, silver and bronze recognition, giving small and midsize utilities the opportunity to showcase their best efforts without worry of being defeated by the larger budgetary capabilities of larger companies.

All efforts and achievements detailed in the awards submissions should have occurred between January 2017 and February 2019. During the judging process, Chartwell researchers will evaluate entries spanning this timeframe using the following criteria:

  • Improved service through communications or technology
  • Innovation and/or originality; the quality of the effort
  • Operational efficiency gains or savings
  • Measured results in customer satisfaction
  • Overall effectiveness

The entry form can be downloaded on the Outage Communications Conference website.

Gold Award winners present their stories at the conference, which will be held in Chicago June 6-7.
